How to eliminate guilt around self care in motherhood

Working moms everywhere will find that fitting in time for “self care” feels next to impossible. And yet, without it you will crash and burn.

For so many of us, we feel guilty when we take time for ourselves outside of work and mothering… like, by dedicating our efforts and resources to ourselves we are somehow depriving our children of something.

Can you relate?

But I want you to remember this:

✨You are modeling for your kiddo every step of the way

✨When you thrive, your child thrives

✨Every choice you make that leads you towards mental and physical health is a gift to your kiddo

✨ Making sure your child’s needs are met does not mean you need to be the one to do it

✨It is ok to disappoint your child (and anyone else) in your process of keeping yourself biologically, psychologically, socially, and spiritually healthy

So, today, I offer you up 5 things you can say to your kiddo when you are making time for yourself:

  1. I know you want me to tuck you in tonight. ________ is going to tuck you in tonight so that I can take a break and be healthy for you tomorrow.

  2. I can see how disappointed you are that I’m going to work. I’m going to spend some time doing the important work I love and I can’t wait to be with you later.

  3. Of course you’re sad that I’m leaving. I’ll be back. While I’m gone I’m going to take care of myself so I can be an awesome mom when I get back.

  4. I know you feel sad when I go. I’ll be back. ______ is going to love you like crazy while I’m gone.

  5. I know you want more books/back rubs/company. I need sleep right now. Sleep helps me stay strong so I can play with you tomorrow.

Remember, every self care boundary includes;

  • Validation of emotion

  • Self care action

  • Why it’s important for your health

  • Commitment to return

  • Modeling for your child

You can do hard things, and self care might just be one of them.

Love,

Kate
